I started working on this boardgame back in November 2019, and it started off as something completely different from what it is today. With inspiriation from amazing games such as Spirit Island, Terraforming Mars and Root I wanted to create a cooperative, card driven, area centered survival game with strong focus around expansion and resource management. During the development period and through a ton of playtesting the game has changed its form quite a lot (going from cooperative to player vs player), but still inherits some of the original characteristics.
In this section I’ll write about my journey from the very start until where I am today. I’ll add my own analysis of what issues I encountered and though many of the ideas I tested didn’t work out for Norsefolk they might inspire you in your game development endeavours!
Note: During playtesting of the earlier iterations I used art I found online just to make it more fun for the playtesters who were all close friends. I never anticipated showing these things online, so if I’ve used your art just contact me and I’ll gladly credit you / take the images down. This is obviously not the case for the game in its current state, but the older cards and boards are riddled with various art I do not own.
#1 – Resources
The main struggle I had with resources was that I wanted variance but also granted through map presence and achievement. This might come as not surprise but a player already ahead then started snowballing thanks to the resource lead. I kept on trying though and created a few resource mechanics which I haven’t seen in other games (maybe for a good reason?). I ended up with one I’m quite happy with however which grants good customization and strategical options!
#2 – Card mechanics and design
Take a look at how the core of the game, the different cards, have evolved over time!
