The challenges of card layout – Feedback session from TableTopGameDesign

After recent playtestning with some friends we had a discussion about the card layout and the intuitiveness of where the information was gathered. I decided to give tabletopgamedesign on reddit a shot so I posted a feedback thread and was expecting maybe 2-3 replies. Instead, a massive amount of people replied with lots of great input, ideas and thoughts. A big shoutout to that reddit commmunity!

The feedback included:

  • A need for a better font
    • This has now been changed from Caslon Antique to Grenze Light
  • Better symbology (source symbols, resource symbols, range symbols)
    • Nothing done so far but still on the backlog
  • Perhaps a more open card design (get rid of the card frame and make the art more visible)
    • Nothing done so far but still on the backlog
  • Move important data (e.g. card cost) to the corner of the card to allow for an easy overview when fanning the cards in hand
    • The most important metadata of the card was the source + range + base cost, and obviously the effect of the card. Many suggested moving these things to the corners which would increase fan-ability of the cards in hand, but would make each individual card more difficult to read. Instead the compact design of keeping everything closely tied together remained. Another reason is that in Norsefolk you gain new cards quite infrequently so you’ll have a good understanding of the cost and requirements of your cards in hand, making it less important to have good visibility with the fanned cards. A third reason is that a large portion of the cost is in the description of the card as an enhancement cost.
  • Grouping of the source and range
    • This has now been implemented as a test for the new version of the cards. It will be interesting to see what the playtesters will think about it
  • Fix the ugly, weird outline around the text and icons
    • This was a known issue for me but I hadn’t looked into it yet. Now’s it’s fixed though and was due to an erroneous setting in nandeck I’m using to generate the cards.
